2Timothy

TIMOTHY 2

The second epistle unto Timotheus, ordained the first bishop of the assembly of the Ephesians, was

written from prison in Rome.

The original Greek will be used often.

These letters are meant to be read as a continuous read.

Paul talks about Abraham and our ancestors. The faith (belief) of our forefathers.

Salutation

2Timothy 1:1  Paul, an apostle of Jesus (Yahshua) Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus (Yahshua),

1:2  To Timothy, my dearly beloved son: Grace (favor, Divine influence), mercy (compassion, loving-commitment), and peace, from God the Father and Christ Jesus (Yahshua) our Prince.

Thanksgiving and Encouragement

1:3  I thank God, whom I serve from (after) my forefathers with pure conscience, that without ceasing I have remembrance of you in my prayers night and day;  (Act 22:3)

Paul is acknowledging the forefathers, namely Abraham. The Bible is a book about a family, the race of Adam, and more specifically the seed of Abraham who is the father of the Anglo-Saxon peoples of Europe and America. We are the descendants of the 12 tribes of Jacob.

 1:4  Greatly desiring to see you, being mindful of your tears, that I may be filled with joy;

1:5  When I call to remembrance the unfeigned faith (unhypocritical belief) that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois, and your mother Eunice; and I am persuaded that in you also.   (Act 16:1)

Timothy's mother was an Israelite of the house of Judah, a Judaean. His father was a Greek.

1:6  Wherefore I put you in remembrance that you stir up the gift (Divine gratuity) of God, which is in you by the putting on of my hands.  (1Tim 4:14; Act 16:1)

The 'gift' is from the promises made to Abraham. Salvation (preservation) is ours not because we believe, or because of works. We, being of the seed of Abraham, have access to this “free gift” when we walk in allegiance to the faith of Abraham.

1:7  For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.

Romans 8:15  For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

Being led by the Spirit of Yahweh, we are the sons of Yahweh. When we imitate Christ's example, we are placed into position of sons, eligible for the inheritance.

The”churches” teach that anyone who “believes” becomes “adopted”. The english word 'adopted' does not mean what the Greek word 'uiothesia' means. Uiothesia means 'placement of son'. The word has to do with kinship, and nothing to do with bringing in other races.

 1:8  Be not you therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Prince, nor of me His prisoner: but be you partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;

The “churches” today are ashamed, they don't rebuke sinners, they don't teach the exclusivity of the promises to Abraham's seed, they don't call on the name of Yahshua the Anointed or Yahweh our Father. They don't stand up for righteousness in the midst of controversy. They tolerate ungodliness by allowing mixed race couples and homosexuals in.

1:9  (Yahweh) Who hath saved (preserved) us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace (favor, Divine influence), which was given us in Christ Jesus (Yahshua) before the world began,

The Greek reads: “...given to us among the number of Christ Yahshua...”

Although we must work towards the  kingdom, performing works do not make anyone a child of God's, we are born children of God's. Race + Grace.

Works is a reference to the rituals of the law, the sacrificial ordinances. These ended when Christ died.

1:10  But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus (Yahshua) Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the gospel:  (1Cor 15:54)

1:11  Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles (Nations of 'lost' Israel).   (1Tim 2:7)

“Gentile” does not mean 'non-Israelite', as the “churches” teach.

Gentile is a latin word that means nation, kin or race. Any nation, race or kin. The “church” teaching deliberately separates the 2 houses of Israel, which are of the same kin, Abraham's seed, and attributes Israelites as the Jews and everyone else as “Gentiles”.

Paul was the apostle to the dispersed Nations of Israel that lost or forgot who they were, resulting from captivity and migration.

Note: In the oldest manuscripts, 'of the Gentiles' is not even in the texts.

11  the good message, for which I have been appointed a herald and an ambassador and a teacher.

1:12  For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

12  For which cause also I suffer these things, but I am not ashamed, for I know whom I believe, and I am persuaded that He is able to keep my deposit for that day.

Paul was not ashamed to teach through the sufferings of trying to get those ignorant Israelites to understand and remember their heritage. (Eph 3:1)

'that which is committed' is one word in the Greek, paratheke, which means, a deposit, a trust or thing consigned to one’s faithful keeping, used of the correct knowledge and pure doctrine of the gospel, to be held firmly and trustfully, and to be conscientiously delivered unto others.

1:13  Hold fast the form of sound words, which you hast heard of me, in faith (belief) and love which is in Christ Jesus (Yahshua).

1:14  That good thing (deposit) which was committed unto you keep by the Holy Spirit which dwelleth in us.

Only Adam's race had Yahweh's Spirit (DNA) breathed into us.

Romans 8:11  But if the Spirit (DNA) of Him (Yahweh) that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, He that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by His Spirit that dwelleth in you.

1:15  This you knowest, that all they which are in Asia be turned away from me; of whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes.  (Act 19:8-10)

A possible reference to Phygellus and Hermogenes disappearing when Paul was arrested.

1:16  The Prince give mercy (compassion, loving-commitment) unto the house of Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain (bondage, imprisonment):  (Mat 5:7; Phm 7; Act 28:20)

1:17  But, when he (Onesiphorus) was in Rome, he sought me out very diligently, and found me.

1:18  The Prince grant unto him that he may find mercy (compassion, loving-commitment) of the Prince in that day: and in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus, you knowest very well.

Christians should not get entangled in the matters of this world, or society.

A Good Soldier of Christ Yahshua

2Timothy 2:1  You therefore, my son, be strong in the grace (favor, Divine influence) that is in Christ Jesus (Yahshua).

2:2  And the things that you hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit you to faithful (trustworthy) men, who shall be able (competent) to teach others also.

2:3  You therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus (Yahshua) Christ.   (1Tim 1:18)

“Just believe”? We must fight the good fight for our Redeemer.

2:4  No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.

The Greek: 4  No one being a soldier, entangled in the matters of this life, in that way would please he who enrolled him as a soldier.

1Corinthians 9:25  And every man that striveth for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible.

The mastery of worldly things is for nothing. The mastery of heavenly things is everything.

A soldier is supposed to fight the good fight.

2:5  And if a man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned, except he strive lawfully.

5  And if also a man contends for anything, he is not awarded if he does not compete lawfully.

2:6  The husbandman that laboureth must be first partaker of the fruits.

2:7  Consider what I say; and the Prince give you understanding in all things.

2:8  Remember that Yahshua Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel:

2:9  Wherein I suffer trouble, as an evil doer, even unto bonds; but the word of God is not bound.

Acts 9:16  For I will shew him how great things he must suffer for My name's sake.

Ephesians 3:1  For this cause I Paul, the prisoner of Yahshua Christ for you Gentiles (dispersed Nations of Israel),

Seed of David. Let's recap this seedline. It starts with the Spirit (DNA) breathed into Adam. It then follows through Seth to Noah, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Jacob's 12 sons and their descendants, who are the white Nations of Europe and America. Christ is from Judah's line which Yahweh designated for the kingly line of Israel. Queen Elizabeth II is of the lineage of Judah. And she is white as snow. Only Abraham's seed through Jacob are the 'called out', chosen, set apart posterity of the elect (chosen ones) of Yahweh.

2:10  Therefore I endure all things for the elect's (chosen ones) sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation (preservation) which is in Christ Jesus (Yahshua) with eternal glory.

There is still no guarantee. The elect still has to strive for allegiance in and imitation of Christ.

Elect is used 4x in the OT. Isaiah 42:1, 45:4, 65:9, 65:22. The Elect of Israel every time. Elect is used 16x in the NT. Elect of Israel every time.

Note: The word 'elect' is a mistranslation. The correct translation reads 'chosen ones'.

2:11  It is a faithful (trustworthy) saying: For if we be dead with Him, we shall also live with Him:

2:12  If we suffer (endure), we shall also reign with Him: if we deny Him, He also will deny us:   (Mat 10:33; Luk 12:9)

How will you suffer if you are “raptured”? Denying Him also means not understanding your heritage and your purpose. It's not to “just believe”, and to tolerate apostasy.

Suffer is G5278, hupomeno, and means to remain, tarry, endure. The word for deny is arneomai, meaning disown.

2:13  If we believe not, yet he abideth faithful (trustworthy): He cannot deny Himself.

13  If we are mistrusting, He remains trustworthy: for He is not able to deny Himself.

Romans 3:3  For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make the faith (assurance) of God without effect?

Numbers 23:19  God is not a man, that He should lie; neither the son of man, that He should repent: hath He said, and shall He not do it? or hath He spoken, and shall He not make it good?

A Worker Approved by Elohiym

2:14  Of these things put them in remembrance, charging them before the Lord that they strive not about words to no profit, but to the subverting of the hearers.  (1Tim 5:21)

14  You should make mention of these things, affirming before Yahweh, not to argue about semantics – useful for nothing besides the subversion (ruin) of those listening.

2:15  Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

Going to “church” is not studying. Believing what your “preacher” says is not studying. You can go to “church” and listen to your “preacher” all you want, but check the scriptures and use a concordance and other study tools to discern if what you are receiving is truth according to scripture. You may not see it yet, but the “churches” are not following scripture.

2:16  But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.

Is it godly to worship a Jewish Jesus of the race of vipers? To seek “personal salvation” instead of loving your brethren and building the kingdom? To “just believe” and declare that “your saved”? To tolerate homosexuals and mixed races in the assemblies? To eat pork and other unclean animals? To not even know and use the name of our God and our Savior?

2:17  And their word will eat as doth a canker (gangrene): of whom is Hymenaeus and Philetus; (1Tim 1:20)

Whom Paul surrendered unto the Adversary, that they may learn not to blaspheme.

Paul cast out the blasphemers.

2:18  Who concerning the truth have erred, saying that the resurrection is past already; and overthrow the faith (The Belief) of some.

The Greek has 'restoration', not 'resurrection'. The restoration comes with the 2nd Advent.

2:19  Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, Yahweh knoweth them that are His. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.   (Num 16:5)

Them that are His. Who was placed on the alter and dedicated to Yahweh? Was it a Negro, or an Asian or Mexican? Absolutely not, they were still eating each other at that time elsewhere. Isaac was dedicated to Yahweh, in his seed (Jacob) shall the chosen of God be 'called'. Christ came only for the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

Do you know the name of Christ? It is Yahshua. Yah-God Shua-saves (preserves).

2:20  But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour.

The great house is the family of Yahweh. The vessels of honor (mercy) are the children of Jacob/Israel. The vessels of dishonor (destruction) are the children of Esau/Edom.

2:21  If a man therefore purge himself from these (vessels of destruction), he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master's use, and prepared unto every good work.

Isaiah 52:11  Depart ye, depart ye, go ye out from thence, touch no unclean thing; go ye out of the midst of her; be ye clean, that bear the vessels of Yahweh.

'thing' is italicized. It was added.  'Touch not the unclean'.

This verse is about race mixing. Yahweh demands we be separate from the other races. When two different races mix, that child is a bastard, a broken cistern that cannot hold the Spirit. Did Yahweh create the mule? (Deut 23:2)

Is America being separate from the unclean? Absolutely not. It's 11/2014 and Obama just gave amnesty to over 5 million aliens. Broken cisterns. Not of the seed of Abraham.

2:22  Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith (belief), charity, peace, with them that call on the Master out of a pure heart.

2:23  But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes.

Don't argue over ignorant inquiries.

2:24  And the servant of the Master must not strive (fight); but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,

Titus 3:2  To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men.

Titus 1:9  Holding fast the trustworthy word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.

 2:25  In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure (perhaps) will give them repentance (compunction, a change of mind) to the acknowledging of the truth;

It's up to Yahweh to open their eyes. All we can do is put ourselves in position to be worthy of understanding by repentance and acknowledgment.

2:26  And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil (adversary), who are taken captive by him at his will.

26  And they return to sobriety from the trap of the False Accuser, being captivated by him for that of his will.

It's not the Devil we are taken captive by, it's his children (Canaanites and Edomites, Jews) that are our adversary.

The Devil doesn't make us sin. The lust of the Devil performed through his children that beguile and captivate our fleshly desires.

Godlessness in the Last Days

2Timothy 3:1  This know also, that in the last days perilous (difficult, dangerous) times shall come.

3:2  For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

Philippians 2:21  For all seek their own, not the things which are Yahshua Christ's.

3:3  Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good,

 3:4  Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God;

This is describing the “church” age of Laodicea from the book of Revelation. The final age before our Prince returns as King. Since the 1850's, America went from a white Christian nation to a melting pot of everything the scriptures warned us about. And to be blunt, it's our own fault for not heeding the word of Yahweh. He told us over and over to rebuke misconduct. Be a separate people. Be an example to the world (society). Watch for the serpent seed and their leaven. Be obedient. We didn't get it 5000 years before Christ nor 2000 years after He came and showed us.

3:5  Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.   (2Tim 3:13; Isa 24:5-6; Mat 24:12; Rom 1:30-31; 2Th 2:3-11)

The Greek: 5  Having a form of piety but denying the value of it. And these you must turn away from.

Piety- veneration (respect) or reverence (fear mingled with respect) of Yahweh and love of His character, or veneration  accompanied with love; and piety in practice, is the exercise of these affections in obedience to His will and devotion to His service.

The sects of the scribes, Sadducees and Pharisees had a form of piety. Christ will explain:

Matthew 23:27  Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.

3:6  For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly (simple) women laden with sins, led away with divers (various) lusts,

Matthew 23:14  Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation.

3:7  Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.  (1Tim 2:4)

Always learning the wrong stuff, and it happens every Sunday in “church”.

3:8  Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these (the Pharisees) also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith (The Belief).

Exodus 7:11  Then Pharaoh also called the wise men and the sorcerers: now the magicians of Egypt, they also did in like manner with their enchantments.

The staff of Aaron that became a serpent and swallowed the other staffs/serpents.

3:9  But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as theirs also was.

Paul's Charge to Timothy

3:10  But you hast fully known my doctrine, manner of life, purpose, faith (belief), longsuffering, charity, patience,

3:11  Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Prince delivered me. (Act 13:45, 14:1-20)

3:12  Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Yahshua shall suffer persecution.   (Mat 5:10)

Psalm 34:19  Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but Yahweh delivereth him out of them all.

The “rapture” is not Yahweh's plan. It is man's idea. Scripture tells us we will be tried in the fire. This life is our test to see if we can imitate Christ's example and encourage others, and rebuke the unrighteous.

3:13  But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.   (Mat 24:12; Rev 22:11)

2Thessalonians 2:11  And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie:

If you don't use your God given brain to examine what you are being taught and to discern what is good from evil, then you will remain ignorant and believe the misinformation. You won't see it, but you will be delusional and believe a lie.

It is easier to fool people, than to convince them that they have been fooled.

 3:14  But continue you in the things which you hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom you hast learned them;

3:15  And that from a child you hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make you wise unto salvation (preservation) through faith (The Belief) which is in Christ Yahshua.

John 5:39  Search the scriptures

3:16  All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine (beneficial for teaching), for reproof (evidence), for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

3:17  That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

17  That the man of Yahweh would be perfect, having prepared himself for all good works.

The scriptures are beneficial for correction. That instructs us to examine the evidence. Come off auto pilot and see if true scripture backs up “church” doctrine.

Defense of the faith.

2Timothy 4:1  I charge you therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;

The Greek: 1  I affirm before Yahweh, even Christ Yahshua who is going to judge living and dead, and His manifestation, and His kingdom:

4:2  Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

2  You must proclaim the word, you must stand ready opportunely and inopportunely, you must bring convincing proof, you must censure, you must exhort with all forbearance and instruction.

4:3  For the time will come when they will not endure (maintain) sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears (tickling the ear);   (Isa 30:10; Jer 5:31; Rom 16:18)

4:4  And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.

Such as the “rapture”. It sure sounds great. “Just believe” and be taken out of here before the fit hits the shan. Christ wasn't “raptured”. He went through tribulation and now look at Him. Immortal. His example is our path.

4:5  But watch you in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of your ministry.

4:6  For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand.

Philippians 2:17  Yea, and if I (Paul) be offered upon the sacrifice and service of your faith (allegiance to Yahweh), I joy, and rejoice with you all.

Paul was in prison in Rome and likely about to be executed.

4:7  I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith (The Belief):   (4Mac 9:24)

Philippians 3:14  I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

Paul was not waiting for the “rapture”. He was 'called, and chosen' by Yahweh to suffer persecution and bring His word to His people.

4:8  Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Prince, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love His appearing.

James 1:12  Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Prince hath promised to them that love Him.

It doesn't say “escape temptation and miss the trial and be given life for just believing”.

Personal Instructions

4:9  Do your diligence to come shortly (quickly) unto me:

4:10  For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world (age), and is departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia.

4:11  Only Luke is with me. Take Mark, and bring him with you: for he is profitable (useful) to me for the ministry.    (Act 12:25; Col 4:14; Phm 24; 2Cor 8:23; Gal 2:3; Tit 1:4)

4:12  And Tychicus have I sent to Ephesus.  (Act 20:4; Eph 6:21-22; Col 4:7-8)

4:13  The cloke that I left at Troas with Carpus, when you comest, bring with you, and the books, but especially the parchments.   (Act 13:13, 15:37-39, 20:6; Col 4:10)

The Old Testament was still relevant.

The “churches” teach that the OT was then and NT is for the “church”.

The scriptures teach that the people of the OT are the same in the NT. The seed of Abraham.

4:14  Alexander the coppersmith did me much evil: the Prince reward him according to his works:

       (Psa 28:4, 62:12; Act 19:33; 1Tim 1:20; Rom 2:6)

4:15  Of whom be you ware also; for he hath greatly withstood our words.

4:16  At my first answer (defense) no man stood with me, but all men forsook me: I pray God that it may not be laid to their charge.

4:17  Notwithstanding the Prince stood with me, and strengthened me; that by me the preaching might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles (dispersed of Israel) might hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.  (Acts 23:11, 9:15)

Psalm 22:21  Save me from the lion's mouth: for You hast heard me from the horns of the unicorns.

4:18  And the Master shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto His heavenly kingdom: to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.   (4Mac 16:24)

Psalm 121:7  Yahweh shall preserve you from all evil: He shall preserve your soul.

Note: The translators chose to use 'preserve' instead of 'saved'. It's the same word in Greek. The “churches” use the word 'saved' like it is a one and done thing. When you understand the meaning of words in scripture, they reveal a whole new light. There is no such thing as being “saved” like the “churches” teach. Which is a self declaration of salvation, like it's up to you. We must understand the word as meaning 'preservation'. When we walk in His example, we are being preserved during this mortal life, tried through the fire, and if we remained in allegiance (the faith, of Abraham and of Christ) we are placed into position of son (“adopted”) and shed our mortal bodies and put on an incorruptible body, reigning with our King here on earth, as it is in Heaven.

Final Greetings and Benediction

4:19  Salute Prisca and Aquila, and the household of Onesiphorus.  (Act 18:2,12; Rom 16:3; 2Tim 1:16-17)

4:20  Erastus abode at Corinth: but Trophimus have I left at Miletum sick.  (Act 19:22)

4:21  Do your diligence to come before winter. Eubulus greeteth you, and Pudens, and Linus, and Claudia, and all the brethren.

Pudens, Linus and Claudia were Brits from the house of Zarah that came to Rome.

4:22  The Prince Yahshua Christ be with your spirit. Grace (favor, Divine influence) be with you. Amen.

That Luke was with Paul in Rome we know and that Paul knew members of the British royal family, held as hostages in Rome, is apparent from greetings he addressed to them by name in this second letter to Timothy. This family in Rome consisted of Cymbeline or Bran the Blessed ('Bran' is the Celtic word for 'King' as may be verified today in any lexicon of the Welsh language), his son Caractacus, with the latter's sons Eubulus and Linus, and daughter Gladys. This daughter received favor from the Emperor Claudius and was renamed Claudia on her marriage to a Roman named Rufus Pudens. Bran was released (before Caractacus), and returned to Britain in 58 AD having accepted the Christian message from Paul and Luke.

TIMOTHY 2 – CHURCH DOCTRINE VS. SCRIPTURE

Below are 3 sources of what the modern churches preach today about the book of Timothy 2.

The purpose is to expose the apostasy and perversion of the scriptures, and to educate our people about the truth of our heritage. That we, the Anglo-Saxon race who are the descendants of ancient Israel, are the people of Abraham's seed and therefore the heirs of the promises of Yahweh. Not the Jews who distort and pervert the scriptures and teach the 'traditions of men'.

The book of 1st Timothy is a Pastoral Epistle (letter from Paul to a church (assembly) leader). The author is Paul who wrote it approximately 62 A.D. The key personalities are the Apostle Paul and Timothy. It was written to give encouragement and leadership guidelines to a young pastor named Timothy at the church (assembly) in Ephesus.

•    Chapter 1 begins with a greeting to Timothy, then quickly turns to a warning against false teachings, and an emphasis on correct beliefs. Paul encourages him to “fight the good fight” (vs. 18).

•    In chapters 2-4, Paul declares that God desires salvation (preservation) for everyone, “Who desires all men to be saved (preserved) and to come to the knowledge of the truth” (2:4).

Paul then teaches that, “For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” (2:5).

Next, Paul lays some important guidelines and principles for church (assembly) leadership. He taught the controversial subject of women in the church (assembly) and what the two offices of leadership in the church were to be, the Overseer and the Deacon. These hierarchies are established by man. No man is above another. A minister of truth is anyone with understanding. He even taught some of the practices that should be carried out in the church (assembly) such as, “give attention to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation and teaching” (4:13). We don't do this in our country anymore!

•    Chapter 5-6, Paul gives guidelines for relationships within the church (assembly) as he explains how to deal with discipline and care for widows. He gives advice of how to minister and lays more guidelines for the wealthy instructing them to be generous. “Instruct those who are rich in this present world (society) not to be conceited or to fix their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy” (6:17).

"Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen." (1:17)

Summary of the Book of 2 Timothy

After Paul's release from prison in Rome in a.d. 62, and after his fourth missionary journey, during which he wrote 1 Timothy and Titus, Paul was again imprisoned under Emperor Nero c. 66-67. It was during this time that he wrote 2 Timothy. There is no evidence Paul was released from prison in Rome, he was most likely executed by Nero in 62.

Reasons for Writing

Paul had three reasons for writing to Timothy at this time:

    • Paul was lonely. Really?!? Phygelus and Hermogenes, "everyone in the province of Asia" (1:15), and Demas (4:10) had deserted him. Crescens, Titus and Tychicus were away (4:10-12), and only Luke was with him (4:11). Paul wanted very much for Timothy to join him also. Timothy was his "fellow worker" (Rom 16:21), who "as a son with his father" (Php 2:22) had served closely with Paul (1Co 4:17). Of him Paul could say, "I have no one else like him" (Php 2:20). Paul longed for Timothy (1:4) and twice asked him to come soon (4:9,21).

    • Paul was concerned about the welfare of the churches (assemblies) during this time of persecution under Nero, and he admonishes Timothy to guard the gospel (1:14), to persevere in it (3:14), to keep on preaching it (4:2) and, if necessary, to suffer for it (1:8; 2:3).

    • Paul wanted to write to the Ephesian church (assembly) through his letter to Timothy.

Who wrote the book?

By the time Paul wrote his second letter to Timothy, the young pastor had been ministering to the church (assembly) at Ephesus for four years, and it had been almost that long since he had received his first letter from Paul. Timothy had been a faithful servant to Paul since he had left home with the apostle more than a decade earlier. Since then, Timothy had ministered alongside Paul for the duration of both the second and third missionary journeys, in places such as Troas, Philippi, and Corinth. Timothy was not unfamiliar to the Ephesians when he settled in Ephesus to minister, having served there alongside Paul for a period of close to three years on Paul’s third missionary journey. Paul wrote again to this young leader in the church (assembly) at Ephesus to provide him encouragement and fortitude in the face of difficulties and trials.

Where are we?

Paul wrote 2 Timothy from a dark and damp Roman prison cell, just before his death in AD 67. 62 AD. The Roman emperor Nero had been slowly descending into madness since his ascent to the throne in AD 54, a process exacerbated by the great fire of Rome in AD 64 that burned half the city. With the residents of Rome in an uproar, Christians became a convenient target for Nero, who used believers as scapegoats for his city’s own lack of preparedness. Paul was one of those caught up in this persecution and was beheaded by Roman officials soon after writing this letter. Likely 62 AD.

Why is Second Timothy so important?

The second letter to Timothy offers a picture of Paul at the end of his ministry, just before his death. Certain personal details in the letter reveal a man settling his accounts and preparing for the inevitable. At the close of the letter, Paul mentioned a significant number of people—some who had wronged him and others who had served faithfully alongside him (2 Timothy 4:9–21). It is as if Paul were giving Timothy a “state of the church (assembly)” address, updating Timothy on the current state of their acquaintances and friends so that the young pastor could carry on after Paul’s departure.

What's the big idea?

Paul understood that the ministry would only become more difficult for Timothy with the apostle’s impending death. (Indeed, at some point after this letter from Paul, Timothy was imprisoned for his faith [Hebrews 13:23]). Paul knew that Timothy’s task of keeping the church (assembly) within the bounds of sound doctrine while encouraging believers (saints) to live their lives well for the sake of Christ would be an often thankless and difficult task. Though hardship would come, Paul wanted Timothy to continue in those things he had learned, drawing on the rich heritage of faith that had been passed down to the young pastor, not just from Paul but also from his mother and grandmother (2 Timothy 1:5–6; 3:14–15).

The most striking feature of Paul’s encouragement comes when the aging apostle used a phrase that showed up prominently in his letter to Timothy four years prior. In that earlier letter, Paul exhorted Timothy to “fight the good fight” (1 Timothy 1:18; 6:12). But in this letter, Paul turned that phrase on himself, writing that he had “fought the good fight . . . finished the course . . . [and] kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:7). What a great encouragement it must have been to the young pastor of the church (assembly) at Ephesus to know that his mentor boldly modeled his perseverance in the faith, even to the point of death.

How do I apply this?

Second Timothy brings us to the brink of death, forcing us to consider its reality and how we might react when faced with it. Paul’s response instructs us still today. His mind was not on himself, dwelling on the injustice that had befallen him. Instead, trusting that God had him right where He wanted him, the aging apostle turned his attention to others, specifically to the church (assembly) and to his young protégé, Timothy.
